What does An Garda Síochána do?

An Garda Síochána is Ireland’s national policing service. As a member of An Garda Síochána, you will operate on the frontlines of policing, providing State security services and carrying out all criminal and traffic law enforcement.

The Regular Unit

The Regular Unit is the backbone of Garda operations nationwide, through the provision of general policing and security services to the population of Ireland. They provide policing in communities through responding to calls for service in emergencies and basic criminal investigations, as well as proactive crime prevention activities such as high visibility patrols and community outreach.  Regular Unit members are often the first point of contact when someone interacts with An Garda Siochana.

Armed Support Unit

The Armed Support Unit (ASU) specialise in dealing with high-risk situations that require an armed response. They are usually called out to situations to assist regular Gardaí. To perform their duties efficiently the Armed Response Unit carry a range Non-Lethal and Lethal weapons including sub-machine guns, pistols, tasers and more. 

Roads Policing Unit

The Roads Policing Unit deal with traffic related incidents and emergencies. They deal with incidents such as road traffic collisions, intoxicated driving and ensuring drivers follow all other road traffic laws. They use specialist equipment both in and outside their vehicles including equipment like breathalysers or ANPR systems.

Detectives Unit

Detectives deal with serious incidents such as assualts, robberies, burglaries, gang violence, assisting unarmed Gardaí and more. They also investigate serious crimes in the local area as well as assisting the Drugs Unit in preventing drug-related crimes.   

Drugs Unit

The Drugs Unit specialise in preventing drug-related crime. They do this through engaging in real-time with criminals as well as leading investigations into organised crime in the local area.

Air Support Unit

The Garda Air Support Unit specialise in providing support from the skies. They are often involved in pursuits that are too dangerous for ground units. The Air Support Unit also assists when searching for a missing person or fugitive.
